Penrice <1>
1st January 1824

I am glad to hear you have at last found a house you like; do you still intend going to Baden in the summer? What Christmas weather have you had – here it is very mild, with continual high winds and rain – The Oxford list of honours has appeared, and Kit <2> is to our universal satisfaction in the first class, Mathematics – I fully expected it when he shewed me his answers to the problems given, but I suppose very few ever succeeded with so short a time of reading – what can have become of the parcel of books, &c. that I sent by the Genoa diligence? Tell Car & Hor. <3> that I am going to bring them two very pretty sketches of Emma’s, <4> representing Penrice & Oxwich Bay which I daresay they have forgotten –

Charlotte <5> is better but still very bad, which is quite lamentable. Mr Lemon <6> has been ill again lately, and so has my Aunt Susan <7> – Julia Sheffield <8> has had a fine boy which I suppose you have heard – I tell you all the news I know of. I think of going to Bowood <9> this day fortnight, & shall not stay there long – I am glad my letter made the state of things plainer to Mr F. <10> about his box –

I conclude by wishing a happy new year to you all –

Your affte Son
W.H.F. Talbot

I wish you knew Kit a little better, you would like him exceedingly
