Chippenham <1>
6 May 1843.

Dear Sir,

I have had some very long interviews with Mr Collen <2> and his Solr Mr Haslam,<3> but without being able to come to any definite arrangement; I have since received the enclosed Letter from Mr Collen which I forward for your perusal. In case you do not come to an arrangement with Mr C. he thinks you shod name an Arbitrator agreeably with the last Clause in his licence, instead of calling upon him for payment of £30. per Cent upon pictures which he has “touched,” or in default of payment, putting an End to the licence – His Solr shewed me the his Copy of the original Draft Licence in which he had on the part of Mr Collen inserted the Clause restricting you in granting Licences on more favorable terms without Mr Collens consent, and he states that he thought the Licence which Mr C. signed contained such a Clause or he would not have allowed him to sign it: Did Mr Carpmael <4> supress [sic] it?

I am dear Sir Yours obliged
West Awdry.
