Jedburgh, Wednesday
9th Octr 1844.
My Dear Constance
I arrived here on Monday and was most delighted to find your letter, <1> for I was getting very uneasy about you all – Pray direct to Edinburgh, until I send another direction.
Extremely dark weather both yesterday and today have prevented me from making any views of the ruined Abbey here, and I proceed this evening to Selkirk. The country about this town is very pretty, the trees are now robed in the various hues of autumn, and there are pleasant drives through deep vallies watered with rural streams.
Your affte
Henry

1. Constance had written on 4, 6 and 7 October - presumably WHFT had just received the first one - see Doc. No: 05092; Doc. No: 05094; Doc. No: 05095.
