Sir
I observe you take exception in Records of Past [sic], Vol. V. to Belshazzar being deemed the grandson of Nebuchadnezzar – from which conclusion arises the question – is the margin in Dan: of grandfather, to be considered an error?
You are no doubt aware of the similar case in 2 Sam: ix. 7 where Saul is spoken of as the father of his Son’s son Mephibosheth? Also 2 K. viii. 25. Athaliah daughter (granddaur) of Omri? might be cited.
I am not sufficient Hebraist to know (nor have I the Septugt ) if the [illeg, underlined] word is the same in Saml & Danl?
May I also ask if no reliance can be placed on the Statement by Josephus Antiq. xi. 2? from which it can scarcely be inferred that Belshazzar was Son of Nebuchadnezzar.
I have sent this thro’ Mr W R. Cooper, altho’ I am not at present a member of his Socy.
I enclose a Stamp for the favour of your reply, & remain
Yrs truly
