Monsieur,

Je pars demain matin pour Paris où je compte rester deux ou trois semaines. Je regrette que votre absence de Londres m’ait empêché de conclure avec vous l’arrangement projeté pour le Calotype. ^<2> J’aurais peut être dû m’y prendre un peu plutôt, mais j’en ai été empêché par plusieurs affaires & je vous prie de m’excuser. Comme je désire que le traité qui doit nous lier ne soit pas differé jusqu’à mon retour, je vous adresse un projet d’arrangement qui je crois, renferme toutes les conditions nécessaires & qui je l’espère vous paraitra équitable. Quand vous aurez eu le temps de l’examiner vous pourrez m’écrire à Paris que nous sommes d’accord & aussitôt à mon retour nous signerons l’acte, que je pourrai faire préparer par mon “Solicitor”. Si vous aviez quelques changements ou modifications à introduire qui fussent justes je m’empresserais de les examiner & si je les approuvais l’acte les mentionnerait.

Une des raisons qui me fait desirer d’être fixé sur cette affaire pendant que je serai à Paris, c’est que je voudrais si nous traitons ensemble faire un arrangement avec un fabricant de papier de mes amis pour la fabrication d’un papier propre au Calotype, & qu’en outre je serais plus intéressé a examiner les divers procédés de Mr Bayard ^<3> & autres personnes afin de connaître les points susceptibles d’être perfectionnés

Si je puis vous être bon à quelque chose pendant mon sejour à Paris je me ferai un vrai plaisir de recevoir vos commissions.

Sir,

I am leaving for Paris tomorrow morning, where I intend to stay for two or three weeks. I regret that your absence from London has prevented us from concluding the projected agreement for the Calotype. Perhaps I should have started work on it a little earlier, but I was prevented from doing so by several business affairs, & I hope that you will forgive me. Since I do not want the contract which should bind us to be postponed until my return, I am sending you a draft agreement which I believe contains all the necessary conditions & which I hope will seem fair to you. When you have had the time to examine it, you can write to me in Paris to say that we are in agreement, & as soon as I come back, we will sign the deed, which I can have drawn up by my Solicitor. If you had any legitimate changes or modifications to make, I would hasten to examine them, they would be mentioned in the deed if I approved of them.

One of the reasons I want to settle this matter while I am in Paris is that if we are going to deal with one another, I would like to come to an arrangement with a paper manufacturer, who is one of my friends, to produce suitable paper for the Calotype. Furthermore, I would be interested in examining the various processes used by Mr Bayard & other people in order to know which aspects could be improved.

If I can be at all useful to you during my stay in Paris, I will consider it a pleasure to receive your commissions.
