La dernière lettre de M le Marquis de Bassano ^<1> me parait résoudre la plus grande partie des difficultés qui me restaient; mais pour éviter tout malentendu, je vais répéter par[?] quelle manière j'ai compris une partie de sa lettre.

1° Après la termination du brévet, la Société ^<2> se dissoudra d'ellemême, probablement, mais elle n'y est pas obligée.

Elle peut prolonger son existence, si cela parait avantageux aux associés -

2° Je serais sur le même pied que les autres commanditaires de la Société, dans le cas qu'elle voudrait continuer [illegible deletion] en activité. La cessation du brévet ne m'affecterait pas plus que les autres -

Il faut que ceci soit clairement entendu: et j'ai des raisons pour croire que la Société pourrait même alors rester en activité, et d'abord, à cause des brévets d'amélioration que nous prendrons, et qui auront chacun 15 ans de durée - [illegible deletion] Car je crois bien que le privilège accordé pour améliorations n'expire pas avec le privilège original, et si cela était, on n'aurait qu'à le prendre au nom d'une autre personne -

Maintenant je voudrais savoir, combien de temps faut'il pour organiser la société, préparer l'acte légal, &c &c? Je me tiendrais prêt a partir pour Paris lorsque ces préparatifs seraient assez avancés - J'apporterais avec moi les instrumens nécessaires pour exercer l'art Photographique et qui serviront de modèles aux opticiens pour en construire un plus grand nombre - Mais il est bien nécessaire d'avoir une localité éclairée, spacieuse, jouissant d'une belle vue si cela se peut, quelque part aux environs de la ville - Si tout cela est différé jusqu'après mon arrivée, beaucoup de temps serait perdu, et le temps devient précieux si on veut profiter de la belle saison de cette année - Vous m'écrirez ce que vous pensez à ce sujet -

La localité dont je parle, deviendrait tout de suite l'école normale des artistes associés à la Société, et je crois que dix jours d'exercises [sic] suffiraient pour former un certain nombre de Calotypistes, qui pourraient se mettre en activité de suite et instruire les autres.

Dear Mademoiselle

The last letter from the Marquis de Bassano seems to resolve most of the difficulties which remained for me; however, to avoid any misunderstanding, I will repeat the manner in which I understood part of his letter.

1° Following the termination of the patent, the Society will probably disband itself but it is not obliged to so do.

It will be able to prolong its existence, if this appears advantageous to the associates -

2° I would be on the same footing as the other partners of the Society, if it decided to continue its activities. The suspension of the patent would not affect me any more than it would the others -

This must be clearly understood: and I have reason to believe that the Society could remain in activity even then, and firstly because of the improvement patents which we shall take, and which will each have a 15-year duration - For I believe that the privilege accorded for improvements does not expire with the original privilege, and were that the case, we would only need to take it out in the name of another person -

Now I would like to know how long it would take to organise the society, prepare the legal act, &c &c? I would be ready to leave for Paris whenever these preparations were far enough advanced - I would bring with me the instruments necessary to practice the Photographic art and which will be used as models by the opticians in order to construct a greater number of them - However, it is highly necessary to have a bright, spacious locality, ^<3> which, if possible, enjoys a beautiful view, somewhere close to the town - If all of this is postponed until after my arrival, a great deal of time would be lost, and time is becoming precious if we wish to take advantage of the summer months of this year - You will write to me what you think of this matter -

The locality of which I speak would immediately become a training school for the artists associated with the Society, and I believe that ten days of exercises would suffice to train a certain number of Calotypists, who could immediately enter into activity and instruct the others.

1. Hugues Antoine Joseph Eugène Maret, Marquis de Bassano (1806-1889), photographic entrepreneur, Paris.

2. The 'Société Calotypique', as it was referred to in the correspondence, or sometimes 'Société Calotype,' was established by Bassano in 1843. WHFT ceded the French patent for the Calotype for ten years to Bassano, and while no official paper has been found on the business, a group of artists assembled to learn the art of the Calotype from WHFT and Nicholaas Henneman.
