Monsieur

Sir

We come to inform you of the felicitous results which we have obtained after only the few days during which we have occupied ourselves with the Calotype. In order to demonstrate to you the importance of this new path, it is with great pleasure that we send you several proofs taken in three and four seconds. We believe, Sir, that it will please you to be able to appreciate swiftly the ardour with which we are dedicating ourselves to the Calotype and the future which is reserved for this business.

Nicholl who, after having been our master, now models himself upon us, is so satisfied by the first results obtained through our care and his jointly, that he believes it to be in your interest to ask whether he should come immediately to meet you as he had been instructed to do or whether he should pursue to the end the new experiments which we have thought of together, in order that, upon reaching England, he should already be aware of the steps which we could have taken. We believe, in fact, Sir, that it may be useful for you to see him dedicate another few days to the resolution of this question and you will see that, however imperfect the proofs you will receive may be, they leave nothing to be desired from the point of view of minute details which, under the magnifying glass, equal those of the Daguerreotype - Nicholl will bring you, if possible, the specimens for the first collections destined to be made public.

We are, Sir, yours most sincerely
For M. de Bassano
Petit de Billier

Notes:

1. This was the the 'Société Calotypique', as it was referred to in the correspondence, or sometimes 'Société Calotype,' was established by Bassano in 1843. WHFT ceded the French patent for the Calotype for ten years to Bassano, and while no official paper has been found on the business, a group of artists assembled to learn the art of the Calotype from WHFT and Nicholaas Henneman. It all ended badly. For more on this subject, see Nancy Keeler, 'Inventors and Entrepreneurs', History of Photography, v.26 n.1, Spring 2002, pp. 26-33. Examples of their output can be seen in Larry J. Schaaf, Sun Pictures Catalogue Fifteen: From Talbot to Turner (New York: Hans P. Kraus, Jr., 2006), pp. 34-37.

2. Nicolaas Henneman (1813-1898), Dutch, active in England; WHFT's valet, then assistant; photographer.
