Chippenham <1>

Tuesday Evg

Dear Sir,

I enclose a few cheques of the new Firm at Devizes –

Since I saw you to day, I have had an application from young John Gale <2>, respecting the erection of a Weighing Engine in the Village – which, it is thought, will be advantageous to the place & Sloane would rent it of him if is put up opposite the Red Lion <3> – The spot which they have pointed out, appears to me unobjectionable & if you should be of the same opinion after he has shewn it to you – it will be only to consider the Rent which should be paid to you for an acknowledgement, as Lord of the Manor.

I am Dear Sir
yr obliged Servt

W. H. Awdry

W. H. F. Talbot Esq
Lacock Abbey

Notes:

1. Chippenham, Wiltshire: largest town near Lacock, 3 miles N.

2. John Gale, carpenter at Lacock.

3. The Red Lion Inn, Lacock.
