Castlet Cottage
May 1st
My dear Henry
One line before the post leaves this morning to tell you that yo we arrived quite safe yesterday. Left Edinburgh by the Express at 9Ì25 - reached Penrith at 10 found two Carriages waiting at the Station to bring us on - and stopped at our own Door as the Clock of St John's Church struck ½ past 4. Had tea & chops & went down to the Landing Place & sauntered in Friar Craig wood till near eight - Our lodging is very clean & comfortable: and the situation beautiful; but we feel very cold at present owing partly to change of residence - and in great measure also to the violent change from hot to cold. weather. Yesterday we started in bright fine weather, rather fresh - and passed through a succession of storms till we passed the border. Much finer from Carlisle till within a short distance of Keswick - but cold. This morning there have been several violent storms of rain but without any wind - The mountain tops are covered with newly fallen snow. - Rosamond means to write but has not time today -
Your affectionate
Constance.
Morgan & the Housemaid leave Edinburgh at 10 on Tuesday - They are to sleep at Crewe, and reach home between 7 & 8Ì on Wednesday evening - I hope she will not have omitted to order the Cobourg <1> & Cart to meet the train at Chippenham - It will be kind of you to ask the question.
Notes:
1.The cobourg was a two-wheeled covered carriage, used especially in the country.
