My dear Henry

I have waited in vain for your promised letter of the morrow, having only received one scrap from you since you left us – which scrap was dated Lacock, Wednesday. I refrained from writing sooner, not knowing whether you were in London or at Lacock. At length we have heard from Caroline as perhaps you may have done – She tells us of Lord Mt E’s narrow escape from the upsetting of his wheel-chair – because he was wheeled by one man, instead of 2 – exactly similar as to the cause, with his escape from drowning last year – How extraordinary that he will expose himself to such risks! – it is alarming in the greatest degree! – He fell on his head – and was at first insensible, – then talked incoherently for ten minutes – How dreadfully frightened Caroline must have been, till he recovered his senses – how thankful when the doctor pronounced favorably of the symptoms! – No doubt the gout which almost immediately declared itself will be very sever – but it is wonderful that he escaped from breaking any of his limbs – I suppose Caroline will write you a detailed account of the accident, – it seems she was not by at the moment, but came up as they were raising him from the ground –

I have heard both from Charles & from Mrs Williams since you dropped him at Ashleworth – very cheerful accts. – Tomorrow we really hope to accomplish or rather commence our little sketching tour, which was not carried into effect when first proposed. Though the weather continued beautiful, we felt a good deal fatigued at that moment, and after you had driven away from the door, we re-modelled our scheme: that is, postponed it – Mlle Amιlina has been too unable to attempt it since, but feels rather hopeful in regard to tomorrow, – so if I do not add anything to this letter in the morning, you may conclude that we actually did set off. – The girls are crazy with pleasure: and Mr Oerdow scarcely less so –

Your affectionate
Constance

In case you have not heard from Caroline, her direction in Norfolk House Cowes –

Wednesday. –
I open my letter to say that a thick fog today makes us put off our excursion – No news from Caroline nor any letter from your dear Self! I have written also to Lacock to you by this post. –
