Rispondo subito alla pregiatissima vostra lettera del 21 agosto la quale mediante Mr Fox ministro plenipotenziario presso questa Corte mi è stata consegnata solamente jeri. Il lungo ritardo che ha sofferto mostra che il corriere del vostro governo che l’ha portata non aveva gran fretta di venire in Italia. Io ne sono dolente poiché vedo che i vostri disegni Fotogenici non potranno giungere in tempo da mostrarli ai Dotti radunati in Pisa, a meno che voi senza aspettare il mio riscontro non me li abbiate spediti prima per qualche vostro compatriota che si porti in Toscana. Ma nel caso se credeste che mandandoli per la posta potessero arrivare prima del 15 ottobre a Firenze, dirigeteli pure a me che mi farò un pregio di sottoporli agli occhi dei scienziati italiani ed avrò io stesso il piacere di ammirare i vostri interessanti lavori dei quali per mezzo dei giornali ne ho avuto contezza.
Nel nostro Museo il giorno dopo che pervenne la notizia di Mr Arago <1> inserita nelle gazzette sul metodo di Daguerre, <2> si ottenne un risultato soddisfacente, e furono copiate diverse prospettive di edifizii e di statue. Ma noi siamo ancora nell’infanzia di una bella scoperta, la quale promette dei grandi vantaggi alle belle arti, e forse di maggiori alla scienza fisica.
La vostra presenza in Pisa sarebbe certamente gradita, ed io vi indirizzai le circolari e l’invito colla speranza che sareste venuto. Se il nostro desiderio verrà soddisfatto, avrò ancora in quell’occasione il contento di rivedervi e di rinovarvi le espressioni della distinta stima e considerazione con cui sono

My Lordship
I reply immediately to your most valued letter of August 21st which was delivered to me only yesterday by Mr Fox, plenipotentiary minister to this court. The long delay to which it was subject shows that the courier of your government who brought it was in no great hurry to come to Italy. I regret this greatly since I see that your Photogenic drawings will not arrive here in time to be able to show them to the Scholars gathered in Pisa unless you have, without awaiting my response, sent them to me first by means of some compatriot of yours who was going to Tuscany. However should you believe that they might arrive in Florence before October 15th if you were to send them by post, please do send them to me and I would be honoured to put them before the eyes of the Italian scientists and I will, myself, have the pleasure of admiring your interesting work of which I heard through the newspapers.
In our museum, the day after news reached us of Mr Arago’s notice about Daguerre’s method which was printed in the gazette, a satisfactory result was obtained and numerous views of buildings and statues were copied. But we are yet in the infancy of a fine discovery which promises great advantages to the fine arts and perhaps greater still to physical science.
Your presence in Pisa would certainly be welcome and I sent you the circular and the invitation in the hope that you might come. Should our wish be fulfilled, I should then once more have the pleasure of seeing you and of repeating the expression of the distinguished esteem and consideration with which I am
