Pregiatissimo Signore

Translation:

Dear Sir

Although you have announced to me your departure from London in but a few weeks, I nevertheless venture this reply at least to assure you of the urgency with which I wish to demonstrate on every occasion the esteem which I profess for you. Of the letters which you say you have written to me, only one reached me, that is to say the one from Varese dated August 9th 1823. And as a consequence of the desires you expressed therein, I sent to Milan the Micrometer which, as had previously been arranged, I had ordered to have made for you. I added to this some of my printed memoirs. However unfortunately after some time I received news that nothing had been delivered, perhaps because you had already left, or perhaps due to some error on delivery on the part of the messenger. I therefore collected the instrument there and as I no longer knew where I could address myself to you I eventually gave it last year to another person who had requested it. I now regret this action, as I hear from your most welcome letter that I will soon have the pleasure of seeing you again in Modena and that you nevertheless wish to own one of my micrometers. Were time not so short, I could promise once more to have a new one constructed: however in any case at the time of your passage through this city I hope to be able to free myself from this commission in some way. Whilst awaiting to express my feelings of respect to you face to face, I am honoured to confirm now that I am

Notes:

1. See Doc. No: 01100.

2. WHFT was presumably successful in securing Amici's micrometer, for on 3 June 1826 Amici received his payment for 240 francs for the instrument. Alberto Meschiari, Libro de' Conti (Firenze: Tassinari), p. 129. The present whereabouts of this instrument are not known.
