Chippenham <1>

Thursday Night

Dear Sir /

I have been to Nash Hill <2> today & endeavor’d to make an arrangement for draining the Land there, upon the terms you mention – Crocker is to go to Bremhill, tomorrow & hopes be may be able to engage a person who lives in that place & who is reported to understand the Business, well – & he is to let me know on Saturday, what his terms are – The Crockers are so much interested in having the thing done well, that I thought they were the best persons to look out for some one who will do it so – I believe them also to be very respectable young men & that they would not recommend any one who was not likely to perform the Work properly – & as I before mentioned, they are so much interested in the Business, that it appears to me unnecessary to go to the expence of advertizing, until they have made enquiries in the first instance –

I heard of the cutting the young Elm, when I was at Nash Hill on Monday & looked at the Stump wch was left – The Evidence upon the subject appeared to me then, not conclusive, tho’ certainly very suspicious against Stevens, & I have to day examined the Man (who saw him on the Evening in question) very particularly – & I am satisfied that it would not convict him in a Court of Justice – it has, however, enabled me to put Stevens upon proving his own innocence, if he thinks it worth while, & if he does not – there will be little doubt on the subject – His Mother told me that he does not live at home now – as his Father could not get paid for his Board & therefore would not keep him – I hear that he belongs to Pewsham parish & works for Farmers there – I have appointed him to come to me on Saturday & clear himself, if he can, from the Charge wch we have against him – & as he must be aware that it is a serious one, I suppose he will endeavour to do it –

I am Dear Sir
Yr obliged Sert
