Je viens de recevoir votre lettre du 11 Juillet passé, <1> que vous m’avez envoyée par le moyen de Mr Le Professeur Amici. <2> Je m’empresse d’y repondre, et de vous dire que j’ai aussi reçu en son tems le dessin de la Fritillaria lutea, que vous avez eu la bonté de copier pour moi de la plante originale cueillie au col de Tende, pour lequel je vous fais mes sinceres remercimens. Maintenant je peux vous donner quelques renseignemens plus précis sur cette plante; car je m’en suis procuré un échantillon provenant d’Allioni <3> même, qui avait bien connu cette espèce, et l’avait indiquée dans son Auctarium ad Floram Pedemontanum sous le nom de Fritillaria involucrata pag. 34. n. 1888., et qui dans la Flora Pedemontana tom. 2. p. 160. n. 1888. l’avait donnée aussi sous le nom de Fritillaria meleagris. Elle est bien la Fritillaria lutea maxima italica Park. Parad. 4m. Si vous me demandez ce que je pense de cette plante, je vous repondrai que je la crois une varieté de la Fritillaria meleagris, car on trouve dans ces lieux des échantillons intermediaires, qui ont la fleur mêlée de jaune et de pourpre. Je travaille toujours avec beaucoup de soin à notre Flore, et j’ai pu obtenir en grande quantité les plantes de la Sardaigne aussi, dont je manquais pour completter [sic] mon travail. Dans le printems passé j’ai publié mes Prælectiones rei herbaria quæ et Prelogomena ad Floram Italicam, <4> où vous trouverez illustrée dans une note votre Hedera a fruits jaunes des îles Ioniennes, qui est bien Hedera chrysocarpa Walsh, mais qui suivant moi doit être appellée Hedera poetarum Bert. Prælect. p. 78. Dans l’année qui viendra je mettrai sous la presse le premier volume de la Flora. Vous m’obbligeriez beaucoup, si vous voudriez me procurer des échantillons de quelques plantes anglaises, qui me seraient tres utiles pour la comparzon [sic] avec nos espèces. Je profite de votre offre, et je vous note cy-bas les plantes, dont je desire l’échantillon. Si a mon tour je peux vous fournir de nos plantes dessechées, vous n’avez qu’à me l’écrire, en m’indiquant aussi la maniere de vous les faire parvenir. Pour celles, que vous voudrez m’envoyer, je vous prie de profitter de quelque voyageur Anglais, qui vient dans le continant [sic]; celui-ci arrivant à Turin ou à Milan pourra mettre le paquet à mon adresse à la diligence. Et si vous voulez ajouter a ce paquet des graines exotiques, cela me fera le plus grand plaisir. Dear Sir,
I have just received your letter from the 11th of July past, that you sent me via Professor Amici. I hasten to reply to it, and to tell you that I also received separately the drawing of the Fritillaria lutea, that you were so kind as to copy for me from the original plant gathered at the Tende Pass, for which I thank you sincerely. I can now give you some more precise information on this plant; for I obtained a sample from Allioni himself, who knew this species very well, and identified it in his Auctarium ad Floram Pedemontanum under the name of Fritillaria involucrata pg. 34, no. 1888, and who also gave it in the Flora Pedemontana vol. 2, pg. 160, no. 1888, under the name of Fritillaria, meleagris. It is definitely the Fritillaria lutea maxima italica Park. Parad. 4th. If you were to seek my opinion on this plant, I would respond that I believe it to be a variety of the Fritillaria meleagris, for in these parts one can find hybrid samples, whose flowers are a mixture of yellow and purple. I am still working very carefully on our Flora, and I was able to obtain large quantities of plants from Sardinia too, which I required to complete my work. Last Spring I published my Prælectiones rei herbaria quæ et Prelogomena ad Floram Italicam, where you will find your Hedera with yellow fruits from the Ionian Isles illustrated in a note, which is surely Hedera chrysocarpa Walsh, but which I would say should be called Hedera poetarum Bert. Prælect. p. 78. In the coming year I will send the first volume of the Flora to print. I would be much obliged, if you should be so kind as to obtain samples of some English plants for me, which would be very useful for comparison with our species. I am taking advantage of your offer, and I am noting for you below the plants, of which I desire samples. If in turn I can provide you with some of our dried plants, you have only to write to me, indicating also how you would like them to be sent. For those, which you should care to send me, I beg you to take advantage of an English traveller, who is coming to the continent; on arriving in Turin or in Milan this person will be able to hand the package to the post chaise for delivery to my address. And if you should like to add some exotic seeds to this package, I would be most delighted. I beg you to allow me to be of service to you, and to accept the sincere regards with which I sign myself
