[Read at the meeting of 18th January 1841].
" Je vous prie <1> de me faire l'honneur d'annoncer à l'Académie <2> qu'au mois de septembre dernier je découvris un moyen d'augmenter extrêmement la sensibilité des papiers impressionnables par la lumière. Cette augmentation n'est pas moindre de cent fois; de sorte qu'il m'est possible maintenant de fixer les images de la chambre obscure avec une rapidité inespérée. Le moindre temps qui m'a paru suffisant à cet effet a été jusqu'ici de huit secondes, c'est-à-dire au mois d'octobre; mais tout m'autorise à croire qu'au milieu de l'été il sera possible de le diminuer encore.
"La préparation des papiers s'effectue à la lumière d'une bougie, car la lumière du jour les détruit instantanément, lors même que le ciel est tout couvert de nuages.
"D'après cela, on pourrait peut-être s'attendre que la fixation définitive du tableau fût difficile ou incertaine; mais il en est tout le contraire, et cette opération réussit facilement.
"Je tarderai encore quelques mois à donner de la publicité aux moyens qui m'ont réussi à amener la photographie sur papier jusqu'au point où elle se trouve actuellement, la mulitiplicité des expériences ne me permettant pas de rassembler plus tôt leurs résultats définitifs <3>."
Translation:
"I ask you to do me the honour of announcing to the Academy that in the month of September last I discovered a means of greatly increasing the sensitivity of papers which are sensitised by light. This increase is no less than one hundred times; to the extent that it is now possible for me to fix the images of the camera obscura with a rapidity I could not have hoped for. The least time which has appeared sufficient to me to this effect up to now has been eight seconds, that is to say in the month of October; however everything leads me to believe that it will be possible to diminish this further by the middle of the summer.
"The preparation of the papers is carried out in candle-light, for the light of day destroys them immediately, even when the sky is entirely covered with clouds.
"Based on this, one could expect that the final fixing of the picture might have been difficult or uncertain; but the exact opposite is true, and this operation succeeds easily.
"I shall wait a few months before giving publicity to the means which have allowed me to bring paper photography to the point at which it currently finds itself, the multiplicity of the experiments hindering me from drawing their definitive results together earlier.
