British Museum
20 March 1857
Dear Sir,
I have despatched at the same time with this letter some dissertations which Mr Oppert <1> a German savant who is a deep student of the Cuneiform desires to present to you. He is also desirous of a copy of your translations if you have one to spare - and if you will favor me by addressing it to me I will deliver it to him at the Museum [illegible deletion] as he is here daily having been sent by the French Government to examine our Assyrian treasures & complete his studies. I think I can assume the miscarriage of Grotefend's <2> tract. I had addressed it perhaps as Chippenham, <3> Cambridge, a letter I lately sent do you so directed having been returned to me
Believe me Yours vy Sincerely
Samuel Birch
