Dear Sir

Finding from an advertisement in the Times that the proper course was to send my subscription of £10,,10,– to Mr Bosanquet <1> I have done so, and therefore need not trouble you with it – I should be very glad to hear that Mr Smith’s last consignment of 2000 Babylonian Tablets or fragments of such has been unpacked at the Museum and the contents found safe.<2>

Believe me Yours Truly
H. F. Talbot

Dr Birch B. Museum

Notes:

1. George Smith, Assyriologist, died suddenly of dysentary on 19 August 1876. He was on an expedition in Ninevah for the British Museum to continue work on Assurbanipal's library. He was only 36 years old. The Queen gave an annual pension to the widow and children. A committee was formed for a 'George Smith Fund' to supplement this. James Watman Bosanquet (1804–1877), banker & author, received the contributions.

3. Although damaged by indifferent packing, the fragments did arrive - see Doc. No: 01329.
