Monsieur,

Translation:

Dear Sir,

I have just been fortunate enough to catch a bright interval in the midst of the bad weather and I was able to see the star of which You speak with my two telescopes of 51 lines. I was able to see them very clearly and well defined, without irradiation or any colour. To clarify your understanding of this experience, I should tell you that it was Half past Seven in the Evening and that with a reversing eyepiece, magnifying 120 times, I saw what the figure opposite indicates, from which one must conclude that the small star, appearing the highest, is in fact the lowest.

I beg you to honour me with a response regarding the action you wish to take in this Matter, for I am in negotiation over one of these telescopes with a French amateur and, from one moment to the next, I could receive an order for a second one; however, I only have two of these dimensions assembled and ready.

I believe I ought to advise you, as requested, that I have two very good telescopes of Six French inches in diameter and two feet, four inches in focus. They can withstand a linear amplification of 900 to 1000 times, but the effect is remarkable with a magnification of between 5 and 600 times. The double ring of Saturn is visible to the least practised eyes as is the Zodiacal band on the surface of that planet. Mounted in copper in two sections which screw together in the middle, this telescope can be moved while placed on its stand and moved [illegible] does not exceed the strength of one man alone. The [illegible deletion] price will be 4600 f for the telescope in its box with all its lenses and 8000 f for a suitable and very solid stand.

I am honoured to be most perfectly Sir Your very humble Servant
