Monsieur,

Sir,

My associate has written to tell me that you are planning to come to Paris soon, & that you had asked him whether I would be back before then to conclude the deed for the Calotype licence. I hasten to write to you in order to clarify this for you, and in order to avoid disrupting your plans. I am involved in fairly important experiments, on the Daguerreotype, which I began with Mr Lerebours, & although it is imperative for my business in London that I return home soon, I doubt that I can leave for the next fortnight. I will, however, do my best not to exceed this period of time, & I hope that nothing will delay me.

I regret not being in London all the more for I feel it is important for me to complete my preparations & to begin experiments on the Calotype in order to be in a position to proceed as soon as the weather is favourable.

It seems to me that if you come to Paris before I leave, we can sign a deed here which will be a sufficient guarantee for both parties.

In any case, please tell me the exact time when you wish to come to Paris, & I will try to arrange my affairs so that I can meet you, either in London or in Paris.

Please accept, Sir, my sincere regards.
A Claudet

Notes:

1. WHFT's trip to France was delayed, but in the end he produced quite a number of excellent photographs, some of which he was to use the following year in The Pencil of Nature. He was in Paris by June - see, for example, Doc. No: 04833.

2. Noel Paymal Lerebours (1807–1873), optician, of Lerebours & Secretan, Paris.
