Monsieur,

A Claudet

Adelaide Gallery

To H. F. Talbot Esqr
&c. &c.

Sir,

I have the honour of sending you the enclosed account for portraits taken with the Talbotype between the 25th of March and the 25th of June 1845. Since the total amount was £25·1·6, I have to pay you 25.0%, namely £6·5·4½. I am upset to have to inform you of such a poor result. So far, the Talbotype has brought me nothing but losses. The entire takings do not even cover an assistant’s salary. It is clear that this situation must be improved & I will be delighted to have the opportunity to see you as soon as possible so that we can agree on the means to make the process more profitable.

I will hold the above sum of £6·5·4½ for your convenience.

Please accept, Sir, my sincere regards.
A Claudet

2. Like many of his contemporaries, Claudet hoped to honour the name of the inventor, but WHFT modestly preferred the term calotype.
