Je vous suis infiniment reconnaissant pour votre aimable empressement à signer mon certificat pour la Société Royale. <2>
Je vous l’envoie & vous serai très obligé si vous avez la bonté de me le faire parvenir par retour de la Poste, parceque j’ai encore plusieurs signatures que l’on m’a promises & nous sommes près de l’époque à laquelle le certificat doit être déposé.
Je suis très heureux d’apprendre que vous avez obtenu de nouveaux perfectionnements <3> dans votre procédé de Photographie, & je suis impatient de les connaître. J’espère que vous pourrez bientôt les communiquer à tous les amis de l’art merveilleux que vous avez créé.
Au retour de la belle saison je vais me livrer avec zèle aux expériences sur le Talbotype <4> dont les applications sont si étendues & qui a un si bel avenir.

I am extremely grateful to you for your willingness to sign my certificate for the Royal Society.
I am sending it to you & I will be much obliged if you would be so good as to send it to me by return of post, because there are still several signatures which have been promised to me & we are close to the date by which the certificate must be lodged.
I am very happy to learn that you have made further improvements in your Photographic process & I am eager to know about them. I hope that you will soon be able to announce them to all the friends of the marvellous art which you have created.
When summer returns, I will zealously devote myself to experiments on the Talbotype, the uses of which are so extensive & which has such a bright future.
Please be assured, Sir, with the expression of my most sincere thanks, of the highest regards with which I have the honour to be, Sir, your most humble servant.

3. In the 1850s WHFT concentrated on developing methods of transferring the photographic image to a printable surface, especially his 1852 'Photographic Engraving' and 1858 ‘Photoglyphic Engraving’.
4. In common with many of the inventor's friends, Claudet sought to honour his name, but WHFT modestly preferred the neutral term of calotype.
