Je vous transmets une lettre que j’ai reçue a votre adresse de la part de M. E. Lacan, <1> qui a été depuis sa fondation l’Editeur du journal photographique la Lumière <2> & qui a l’intention de fonder un autre journal du même genre.
M. Lacan desire avoir le patronage de tous ceux qui ont rendu service à la Photographie & le vôtre, en première ligne.
Je connais particulièrement M. Lacan. Il est recommandable sous tous les rapports, comme écrivain habile & conscientieux, & comme homme honorable. Il est un de ceux qui en France ont toujours cherché à vous faire rendre justice & à vous donner l’honneur exclusif qui vous appartient d’avoir inventé la Photographie sur papier par le système de négatifs, cette admirable invention qui produit tant de merveilles.
Je serai très heureux si vous voulez bien répondre à la lettre de M. Lacan & l’autoriser à s’appuyer du patronage qu’il réclame de votre bienveillance.
Si vous lisez le Bulletin de la Société française de Photographie, <3> vous aurez vu que j’ai été attaqué pour avoir, dans un mémoire lu à la Société Photographique d’Ecosse, oublié de mentionner M. Bayard <4> dans l’invention de la photographie & de n’avoir parlé que de vous. J’ai fait ma réponse à cette attaque & je pense qu’elle paraitra dans le No de Janvier. Si vous ne recevez pas ce journal je vous en enverrai des copies exemplaires, cette discussion vous intéressera. En attendant je vous envoie mon mémoire qui a donné lieu à l’attaque.
Il serait bien convenable que la photographie pût reproduire une bonne ressemblance de son auteur, & je vous rappelle, Monsieur, la promesse <5> que vous m’avez faite de me procurer l’honneur de faire ce portrait.
J’espère que vous profiterez du retour du beau temps pour cette operation.
J’ai fait dernièrement un portrait de Sir David Brewster <6> qui est très bien & je vous prie d’en accepter une copie.

Sir,
I am forwarding a letter which I received at your address from Mr E. Lacan who has been the Editor of the photographic journal la Lumière since it was founded, and who intends to found another journal of a similar nature.
Mr Lacan would like to have the patronage of all those who have contributed to photography & above all, yours
I know Mr Lacan particularly well. He is commendable in every respect, as a skilled & conscientious writer & as an honourable man. He is one of the men in France who has always tried to do you justice & to accord you the exclusive honour, which is rightfully yours, of having invented Photography on paper using negatives, this admirable invention which produces such marvels.
I will be very happy if you would care to reply to Mr Lacan’s letter & give him permission to rely on the patronage which he asks of you.
If you read the Bulletin of the Société française de Photographie, you will have seen that I was attacked for having forgotten to mention Mr Bayard’s contribution to the invention of photography in a paper which was read to the Scottish Photographic Society, and for only talking about you. I have replied to this attack & I think that it will appear in the January No. If you do not receive this journal, I will send you some copies as this discussion will interest you. In the meantime, I will send you my paper which gave rise to the attack.
It would be most fitting if photography could reproduce a good likeness of its inventor, & I remind you, sir, of the promise which you made to give me the honour of taking this portrait.
I hope that you will take advantage of the return of the good weather for this operation.
I have recently made a portrait of Sir David Brewster which is very good & and I ask you to accept a copy.
