Dr Sir
Messrs Soulier & Clouzard of Paris have liberally given me permission to engrave and publish some of their photographic views <1> – I shall therefore put the matter in hand immediately, and make some steel engravings which I will send you. You can then select one of them for publication in your journal<2> – I shall be able to send you the full description of the process on the 20th and perhaps sooner –
I remain Yours very truly
H. F. Talbot
Mr W. Crookes
Notes:
1. Clouzard & Soulier, photographers, Paris. In his photoglyphic engraving experiments, WHFT rarely used his own images, but rather solicited glass positives from currently active commercial photographers. Clouzard & Soulier provided many such images, mostly in the form of halves of stereo views.
2. WHFT produced photoglyphic engraving prints to accompany George Lumley's articles on the subject, and included ‘Bridge over the Moldau, Prague’; ‘Palace of the Duc de Montpensier, Seville’; ‘The New Louvre, Paris’; ‘The Gate of the Cathedral of San Gregorio, Valladolid’; and ‘The Institute of France’. See ‘Description of Mr Fox Talbot’s New Process of Photoglyphic Engraving’, Photographic News, v. 1 no. 7, 22 October 1858, pp. 73–75; and v. 1 no. 10, 12 November 1858, pp. 114–115.
