This entirely novel attempt at Ye novel style of this publicn will we hope be favourly recd. by ye public.

It has not bn attempted before, as we believe, to circulate on a large scale publish an actual photographic portrait s of an any eminent individual, in a miniature case s &c &c. At least such publicn has not yet been attempd on a large scale. It wd have been much easier, especly at this time of year, to have published a lithographic copy of the port but we presume that this wd have been thought much less interesting than the actual photograph.

To the Editor of the

We have the pleasure of sending a copy of Kossuth’s <1> portrait which we have commenced publishing today, at the very low price of 15/ in order to bring it within the means of the most of his admirers.

This portrait was taken by us on the 4th November<2> & has been pronounced an excellent likeness by Lord Dudley Stuart in the following letter with which he has favoured us-<3>

This entirely novel attempt at The novel style of this publication will we hope be favourably received by the public.

It has not been attempted before, as we believe, to circulate on a large scale publish an actual photographic portrait s of an any eminent individual, in a miniature case s &c &c. At least such publication has not yet been attempted on a large scale. It would have been much easier, especially at this time of year, to have published a lithographic copy of the portrait but we presume that this would have been thought much less interesting than the actual photograph.

We beg to add that the [illegible deletion] entire profits of this publication will be entirely given to the Hungarian refugees.

We remain, Your Obedient Servants,

Notes:

1. Louis Kossuth / Lajos Kossuth (1802–1894) Hungarian Governor-President in exile and freedom fighter.

2. The Standard reported on 5 November that "M. Kossuth, accompanied by Cuntr Francis Pulszky, visited Messers. Henneman and Co.'s Photographic Establishment, 122, Regetn street, yesterday, when M. Kossuth sat for his portrait, which will be published in a few days, exclusively for the benefit of the Hungarian refuges in England." Ferencz Aurelius Pulszky (1814-1897), author, poet and diplomat, was one of Kossuth's main supporters and was exiled to England.

3. Lord Dudley Coutts Stuart (1803-1854), politician & advocate of Polish independence. This letter has not been located, but Stuart was instrumental in setting up the portrait sitting - see Doc. No: 06473 and Doc. No: 06500.
