Farrance’s Hotel <1>
Saturday June 4th 1853
My dear Henry
I am very sorry for many reasons that you decided against Oxford. I almost wonder that Mr Stafford, Major Beresford & the D. of Northumberland <2> are not included in the list of Doctors of Civil Law. I saw D– Derby <3> looking very rayonnant <4> last night at the Palace – There was a Concert there – & I was cordially greeted by our old friend Danneskiold, <5> with his grown-up daughter Csse Henriette <6> – He is very little altered – & seemed as much surprized at the idea of my having a Son <7> at Oxford, as I was at seeing his daughter come out – the Duke of Genoa <8> was also there – rather a fine soldier-like man, though not goodlooking.
I am afraid, dear Henry, I cannot pay you another visit this time – Indeed my last was not skimpy – I staid three whole days – wh was a great deal considering I had only one week to be at home – And now I must be back again here for my Waiting on the 21st so you see I have really no time to spare. My love to all
Yr very affte
Caroline
