My dear Henry
We have heard by this post from Fanny, the upper housemaid, at Laycock Abbey, that she wishes to go the 1st of February. Mama <1> wishes you would speak to her, & ask her what her motives are for so doing, & let her know. Mamma [sic] is very much discomposed at this, as she hoped she was a steady character & would have remained there for life. Write on this subject as soon as you can, because we must take some steps about taking another. Above all things you must make it clear to her that she cannot go till we have found another, & she must give up all the things she has charge of into the hands of the housekeeper. These are formalities which are always understood & complied with on these occasions.
Papa <2> was very angry with Robert <3> this morning for not having woke [sic] him, as he wished particularly to see you before you went.
Addio caro fratello <4> write to me soon –
