Morpeth <1>
July 31st 1818

I came back to this place yesterday with Trevelyan, <2> in order to take a look at the sea coast today: but it rains so, & seems likely to rain all day that I fear we shall be disappointed. Yesterday evening we took a long walk along the banks of the river Wensbeck, part of which was through a wood 3 miles long & very pretty. I intend soon to continue my travels, Trevelyan accompanying me a littles way. You say you are going to defer your journey to Rouen; does that mean put it off altogether? I climbed up Simonside Hill the other day, whence I saw a great extent of sea: Warkworth Castle: <3> Coquet Island: the town of Blyth: the hill called Cross Fell in Cumberland &c.

You look down upon the river Coquet and the little town of Rothbury which you may find in the map.

The Cheviot Hills appear about five miles from you, tho’ in fact they are nearer fifteen.
