Brighton
Wednesday Evg – July 14th 1819 –

I got to Dieppe at four o’clock – M. le commissaire de police, <1> a rascal who is going to be turned off in a fortnight, positively refused to sign my passport on the ground that it had not been visé <2> at Hâvre. We therefore got him cité <3> before M. le Maire a very civil old Gentleman, who talked him over – this was very amusing – I dined at M. de la Rue’s<4> – got an indifferent dinner, but very cheap. I found M. de la Rue himself remarkably attentive & obliging – finding the Unity Capt. Clare about to sail, I got on board her, & here I am after a calm passage of exactly 24 hours – More in my next.
