My Dear Henry
The Man has just been here with the Estimate for the iron railing. That beautiful one from the Hôtel de Ville at Rouen, will come to £45 & putting up 5 more. He brought a pattern of a gothic one £30 – it was very well, but not to compare to the other. You must send me the exact measurement which may make some difference, as this was only by guess. It must be measured from the middle of the Stone work, where the iron rails now Spring from. He is a great Man in his way, & it is not likely to be done better by anybody else. Caroline <1> is sorry her little scheme met with no encouragement, but yields to your reasons, and would more if she knew better the state of the case. They are a Stultified population, inaccessible to any chivalrous ideas connected with the coronation, & would as Horatia <2> said, infinitely prefer coals & warm petticoats at Xmas I think the person from the Marble Works had better go down about taking out the Tablet while you are there, & then it can be altered while I am here – which would prevent future mistakes
