8th August 1857

Dear Sir,

I have just had an Official Letter fm Mr Panizzi informing me that the translations are to be placed in the department of MSS & accessible to the public generally. This is satisfactory & I am obliged to you for your aid in bringing it about. I hope in a few days to send you a copy of a paper on the Assyrian pronouns – supplementary to that which I sent you before. I have some additional facts to communicate to the public; which I hope to bring forward at the meeting of the British Association in the latter end of the month. They relate to the Ethnological position of the Accadians (the inventors of the cuneatic syllabary) the connexion of whose language with the Indo European I think I have established in a satisfactory manner. I have also some curious points as to the original greek alphabet & its connexion with the Phoenician – curious at least in being at variance with what <Donaldson?> has stated as the result of his investigations. I think I have discovered or rather demonstrated which were the 16 Phoenician letters for which the Greeks too k their original alphabet. My list contains 4 not acknowledged by Donaldson & of course excludes 4 which he acknowledges.

I dont know if you are interested in enquiries of this nature.

Mr Pfister of the British Museum medal Room has just sent me a rambling book – republished fm the Numismatic Chronicle – in which he treats of almost every subject – He has got together a good many good things but mixed up with some by absurd ones – Some of his Assyria translations are Oppert’s

I remain Yours vy truly

Edw Hincks

H. F. Talbot Esqr

I wish you could be at the British Association meeting.
