Glasgow.
Dec. 18. 1835

My dear Sir

As I think I may be allowed to write again under cover to Mr Strangways <1> I do so, though it is only for the sake of telling you that I have made out one of your plants, which, when I had the pleasure of last writing to you, I thought new. It is your n. 4, <2> “Caucalis” from the Ionian islands, & is Orlaya grandiflora, an old Caucalis, but now formed into a new Genus in Decandolle <3>, which I had not thought of looking into.

I am glad to find, by the Unio Itineraria announcement, <4> that they have received a large collection from Mount Sinai. It is these hardy & industrious Germans, who will, if any can, penetrate into Africa, & if they can once reach the mountains a glorious harvest indeed may be expected.

I hope the specimens of Hymenophyllum <5> were satisfactory to you. The two species are quite distinct.

Very faithfully Yours
W. J. Hooker
