Stansfield Mill.
1st January 1836 –
Sir.
In reply to your letter <1> of the 30th Decr I beg to say that the men you write about are quite unsuitable for migrating into this neighbourhood, Mr Muggeridge the Agent to the Poor Law Comrs at Manchester was down here abt 3 weeks ago. He personally satisfied himself of the improved condition of Baine’s family. Mr M had the names of 6 agricultural labourers most strongly recommended by Sir E Parry but he could not get them situations at present, – I have made offers through Mr M for 3 or 4 families: I expect two to arrive here shortly. The prejudice against removing, of which you speak, seems unaccountable, especially as Baines have done so well. However when any of your Parishioners become disposed to migrate I shall be happy to hear from you & if I don’t want workpeople myself at the time I will endeavour to get them employment in this neighbourhood.
I am Sir
