48 Camden St. N.W.
My dear Sir,
In consequence of the absence of Mr [Grote?] from Town it was impossible to get the prescribed form filled up until yesterday. I then forwarded it to Dr Guest of Sanford Park. It will then go to Dr Bosworth at Oxford who will forward it to you, and I wd ask you kindly to send it on to "John T. Graves Esqr
29 Grosvenor Place South
Cheltenham"
Although one of the Secretaries of the Philological Society, I have from the first made it distinctly known that I could do little for the Society in that capacity, and that the chief burden must fall on my colleague who accepted the post with that understanding: I therefore cannot speak with any accuracy, until I see him or hear from him; but I believe the numbers of the Society to be somewhat short of 100. My feeling t is that the Council would be only too glad of your offer. Did you ever discover who the author of the outrageously ignorant and unjust article in the Quarterly was. I was once told that the late Mr Garnett was, but I do not believe it.
Yours very truly
