Serjeants Inn Fleet Street
14 June 1836
Dear Sir,
I am sorry to hear of your Illness.
In estimating the Value of the Rec[tory]<1> of Fisherton <2> I must be governed by the Fact of the necessity for the residence of the Rector & the presumption that he will not be allowed to hold another Living with it.
If the Rectory was £500 a year I shod estimate it at about 16 years Purchase but I shod not refuse 15.
Take Fisherton at (not) 193.0.0
Deduct for Curate 80.0.0
113˝0˝0
Which at 12 years Purchase would be £1256 but I wod by no means recommend You to refuse £1050 for I do not consider that the Rectory is worth more than 10 years Purchase.
I am Dr Sir Yours truly
W.R. King

2. Fisherton Anger, Salisbury, Wiltshire. WHFT had inherited the advowson (the right to present a new Rector to St Clement's Church) from his father, Davenport Talbot, and held it until 1849. The new Rector would enjoy the income and assets of the living, including the Rector's house. St Clement's was demolished in 1852 and parts of it were incorporated into the new St Paul's Church.
