Monsieur,

Sir

Allow me to thank you for the most gracious letter which you did me the honour of writing to me, and also for the promise which you are so good as to make to send us, for our journal, an engraving obtained using your technique. Whenever this interesting communication should be made to us by you, it will be welcomed with joy. Only I fear that you are too difficult with your own works and that you find insufficient that which all would consider as realising veritable progress. But it would be ungracious of me to insist now, and I must content myself to await your pleasure.

As for the request which I took the liberty of putting to you to authorise me to place our journal under the patronage of your most honoured name, I fear that I expressed it badly. I spoke of “collaboration”, it is “support” or “assistance” which I should have said. I am so bold as to hope that you will allow me to cite you, Sir, [first?] at the head of the eminent men who are so good as to offer their “support” to our work (purely intellectual support) since you are so good as to tell me that you take an interest in it, and that you furthermore deign to contribute to it by communicating your learned works.

I am convinced, Sir, that you will forgive my insistence in this regard, and that you shall only see therein a testimony of my profound respect for your character and of my admiration for the services which you have rendered to science.

Please accept once again, Sir, the assurance of these regards.
