<on mourning paper>
Penllergare
Thursday evening
My dear Cousin Henry
I am just come back from Penrice where I drove down today on purpose to see you and am so very disappointed to have just missed you! I did not think you would have paid such a shabby visit after coming so far, or I would have persevered in the attempt I made to get down on tuesday <sic>, when the stormy morning turned me back – I quite hoped to persuade you to pay us a visit here before you left Glamorganshire! We have some fine Orchids in flower & some gay spring flowers. When we were abroad last year we were very nearly going to see the “Shoes” you told us of, but heavy snow which fell on all the heights, for 3 days after the 12th of June would have hindered such an expedition – I should be very much obliged if you would write down the locality & the time of year when they may be found in case we may be able to go again to that neighbourhood – I have lost the paper you sent me by my sister Jane, with this information – & very much regret it –
I hear that Mrs Talbot & your girls are at S. Remo – a charming place! We returned from Italy by the Lake of Garda and very much enjoyed Riva and our visits to the Val di Ledro and Mte Baldo from thence – We found Philadelphus Seringa and Horminum Pyrenaicum & Fraxinellas & Genista radiata & innumerable treasures –
Believe me to be yr affte cousin
