J’ai l’honneur de vous adresser aujourdhui par le Book Post un exemplaire de ma nouvelle traduction de l’inscription de d’hammurabi. Pour servir de comparaison j’envoye aussi un exemplaire de ma première traduction imprimée il y a deux ans, et dont j’espère avoir corrigé les erreurs principales. Avez-vous une opinion arrêtée sur l’age de l’inscription? A moi elle semble de l’époque à peu près de Tiglath Pileser I cest à dire vers 1120 B.C. Mais Rawlinson <2> lui donne 400 ans de plus – Je désire envoyer un exemplaire à M. Oppert <3> mais j’ai perdu son adresse à Paris, pouvez vous me la donner?
J’espère que vous continuez vos travaux importans sur l’archéologie Assyrienne.

Dear Sir,
It is my honour today to send you by Book Post a copy of my new translation of the inscription of Hammurabi. For comparison, I have also sent you a copy of my first translation printed two years ago, of which I hope to have corrected the main errors. Do you have a firm opinion on the age of the inscription? It appears to me to be from around the period of Tiglath Pileser I that is to say approximately 1120 B.C. But Rawlinson mkes it 400 years older – I would like to send a copy to Mr Oppert but I have lost his address in Paris, could you give it to me?
I hope you are still carrying out your important research on Assyrian archaeology.
