Illustrissimo Signore.

No 1. Saxifraga pygmaea Don: monogr. No97.

No 2. Saxifraga Seguierii Sprengel.

No 3.

No 4.

No 5.

Translation:

Most Illustrious Sir

As I wrote to you in my previous letter, I am now about to trouble you to ask to do me the favour of presenting to Mr David Don, author of the monograph on the Saxifraga genus inserted in vol: xiii. p.11. of the Transactions of the Linnean Society of London, the enclosed species of Saxifraga, and of asking him under which name he classed them in the aforementioned monograph.

No 1 Saxifraga pygmaea Don: monograph No 97. I would be grateful if you would ask Mr Don himself whether it really is this or if it is not, to what I should refer.

No 2. Saxifraga Seguierii Sprengel. This species was reported by Mr Don as a variety of the Saxifraga sedoi of Linn. However, I believe this to be a good species and one which is certainly distinct from Wulfen’s Saxifraga sedoides. Might my No 2, that is to say Saxifraga Seguierii, be Linnaeu’s true Saxifraga Sedoides? However in that case it would be necessary to change the name of the plant described by Wulfen in Jacquin’s miscellan vol. 2.1. 21 f.22. which would be entirely different from the other.

No 3. I wish to know whether it is a variety of Wulf’s Saxifraga moschata.

No 4. I should like to know whether it is Wulf’s true Saxifraga moschata?

No 5. Is it this or another species which Mr Don gave under the name of Saxifraga tenera Sutter?

These are the things which you can ask the aforementioned illustrious botanist Mr Don and that you would do me a great pleasure by communicating them to me as soon as you have received a response.

In my last letter I forgot to tell you that the species of Senacio which you favoured me with and which I thought to be new, I in fact found to be nothing other than quite a minute specimen of the Senecio squalidusa, that is to say Villars’ Senecio gallicus.

I thank you once more for the plant specimens and I profess myself to be filled with esteem and veneration.

From Pavia
December 16th 1823.

Your most obedient servant
G. Moretti
