My dear Sir
My objection about iltuppur was not to the meaning of the root, but to the first person as it had been altappar. – I think I should read <cuneiform>, “the road has been travelled,” considering illillit an irregularly formed passive for inlillik. You are no doubt right about Ki riva; perhaps “because of my affection” might be pref ferred. <hebrew> is used for friend; see <hebrew> “my fellows,” speaking of the friends of Jephtha’s daughter Judg.xi.37. I am very glad to hear that the “Istar Tablet” has been completed; it is most interesting. I have been in the habit of reading <cuneiform> sinnis, but have never thought much about it. I rarely do until it comes in the Alphabet, and I am a long way from S. I have got <cuneiform> in 27II 45 – but for <cuneiform> I I <sic> have only the remark “on a slab”; can you tell me the reference? I have found 16III in a bundle half an hour ago
Should have replied before but have been correcting a proof up to ND. I have been rendering <cuneiform> in Sen T.iii.16, as “arrows” although there is no <cuneiform>. I find that <cuneiform> occurs in Sen T. 14 & vi.56; I had read it as in the lithograph <cuneiform> biznate in pp 147 and 369, of course without understanding it, and did not find my error till p 624, and then without finding the meaning, which dawned on me in Smith’s pp139.140. There are several errors in Tayler’s Cylinder, about a dozen I think I have noted. I found them all in the photograph. If of any interest to you, I will send you my list.
Yours faithfully
