Foreign office
6 June, 1860.
Dear Sir
I cannot agree with [ritziput?]; we should have had not , and the little dictionary I have here gives, not condidit, but tesselavit, stravit, exornavit, distinxit. Moreover Vaux, with his nail, scratched out the dirt, and clearly read . This could not have been Layard’s Brick, it was brought to the museum from the country only a few days before we saw it.
I had a letter from Rawlinson yesterday, who returned the Syllabaries together with portions of several other fragments which he copied himself, some years ago, but which I have not found; so that we shall have a valuable collection. I wish he had given them to me before his departure; but he went off in a great hurry at last.
I have not forgotten to send the Nakshi Rustam Inscription, but the printer has not yet had leisure to search for the bundle, and the copy I have used myself is old and dirty, and has my ticks and memorial marks upon it. I have no doubt I shall get another in a day or two.
Yours truly
Edwin Norris
