Lord Grantham <1> è arrivato e fui ieri mattina da Lui. Eccone il risultato. Mi disse che al momento non poteva darmi alcuna risposta decisiva attesocchè non sapeva se la persona di cui mi aveva parlato fosse in Londra o fuori; ed io lo colsi in parola e soggiunsi rispettosamente che nell’incertezza che potesse o no prendermi non potevo trascurare un’altra buona occasione che mi si presentava e che in conseguenza intendevo di essere in libertà. Ecco dunque finito decorosamente questo impegno e sono quindi a disposizione di V.S. Questa è forse l’unica che dappoi lungo tempo mi è bene riuscita. Sono veramente contento e ne ringrazio il Celo. Anche il mio braccio va meglio e Martedì finisce la cura di certe fumicazioni che il chirurgo mi ha suggerito e che a dire il vero mi hanno fatto molto di bene. Egli mi assicura che tra poco sarò affatto ristabilito. Mi disse [illegible] che il Martedì che la vidi era il quindicesimo giorno che Nicola le aveva chiesto il suo congedo in un mese: finirò quindi giacché serve il tempo la mia cura Martedì e partirò Mercoledì per esser a Clifton <2> il Giovedì. Voglia ricordare la mia servitù a tutta la rispettabile di Lei famiglia e con vera stima e sincero attaccamento passo a segnarmi

Most Esteemed Lord
Lord Grantham has arrived and I went to see him yesterday morning. Here is the result thereof. He told me that at the moment he could not give me any definitive response since he did not know whether the person of whom he had spoken was in London or outside; and I interrupted him and added respectfully that in a state of uncertainty I could not ignore another fine opportunity which presented itself to me and that in consequence I intended to be free. And thus has this commitment reached its decorous end and I am therefore at Your Lordship’s disposal. This is perhaps the only thing for a long time which has succeeded for me. I am truly happy and I thank heaven for it. My arm is also better and on Tuesday I shall end the fumigation treatment which the surgeon suggested to me and which truth be told have done me a great deal of good. He assures me that I shall soon have completely recovered. He told me [illegible] that the Tuesday when I saw him was the fifteenth day on which Nicola has asked to take his leave in a month: I shall therefore finish my treatment on Tuesday since the time is necessary and I shall leave on Wednesday to be at Clifton on Thursday. Please remind your respectable family of my servitude to them and with true esteem and sincere attachment I sign myself
