Non ci ho scritto prima d’ora sperando di poterci dare delle nuove diverse da quando sono arrivato mentre Giovedì la passai veramente malissimo. Giunsi a Bath alle <6?> e mezzo e non feci in caso di bagnarmi tanto stavo male e l’assicuro ero spaventatissimo. Cominciai la cura ieri ed in aggiunta mi son ordinate le Hot Pompe. Ebbi però una passabile giornata ed oggi molto meglio. Se così era in pochi giorni se non sarò affatto rimesso sarò certamente in miglior stato che Dio lo voglia. Ho consultato questa mattina un’altro medico di cui ho scordato il nome in questo momento ma che è riputato il migliore in questi contorni e nulla ha saputo aggiungere alle prescrizioni del Dr. Harvey. Solo mi ha fatto un po’ di paura dicendomi che sarò ben fortunato se sarò bene in un mese. Per questo solo ho pagato mal volentieri il suo consulto sperando però che lo sbagli. Sarei molto contento se potessi essere a Lacock prima che V.S. parta. In tutti i casi mi lusingo che vorrà essere abbastanza buono per riscrivermi prima della sua partenza. Ho mandato a M. <illegible> alcune bottiglie di Soda Watter <sic> e nello stesso paniere c’ho involto alquanto sapevo di Napoli per Lei perché non ne aveva quasi più ma fin ora non so nulla se l’abbia o no ricevuto. Voglia avere la bontà di domandarlo e farmelo sapere perché nel caso di perdita possa farmene render conto da cotesto Post Office avendolo fatto porre a libro. Voglia ricordare la mia rispettosa servitù alla di Lei sti.ma e Nobile famiglia e mi creda a tutta prova

I have not written to you sooner for I hoped I might be able to give you better news than when I arrived but on Thursday I was really quite bad. I reached Bath at half past <6?> and I was so unwell that I was unable to bathe and I assure you I was very frightened. I began the treatment yesterday and, what’s more, I ordered the Hot Pompe for myself. I nevertheless had a fairly good day and today much better. If it is so in but a few days, then, if I am not completely discharged, I shall certainly be in a better state, God willing. This morning I consulted another doctor whose name I have forgotten for the moment but who is reputed to be the best in these parts and he was able to add nothing to Dr Harvey’s prescriptions. He only frightened me a little by saying that I would be lucky if I am better in a month. For this alone, I paid reluctantly for the consultation, hoping nevertheless that he is mistaken. I should be most happy to be able to be at Lacock before Your Lordship’s departure. I have sent a few bottles of Soda Water to Mr <illegible> and in the same basket I also put some for you since I knew from Naples you had almost none but as yet I know not whether you have received it or not. Would you be so good as to ask for it or to let me know because, in case of loss, I would hold the Post Office accountable, having <had it sent book post>.
