Fox Talbot Esq
Laycock Abbey
Chippenham

Sir,

We take the liberty of asking you if you would be good enough to send us a short account of the important part you took in the early life of photography for insertion in our new Edition of Tissandier’s ‘Photography’ <1> of which we enclose a few particulars. In the first Edition, which was little more than a translation from the french [sic], the part wh Englishmen took in the developt of the art was but scantily referred to & this we desire to put right as much as possible. Apologising for troubling you

We are, Sir Yours obediently
Sampson Low, Marston & Co
per RB.M

Notes:

1. WHFT supplied a manuscript and two original photoglyphic engravings for inclusion in John Thomson, editor, A History and Handbook of Photography, Translated from the French of Gaston Tissandier, second and revised edition, with an Appendix by the Late Henry Fox Talbot (London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1878). A page of the original manuscript is reproduced in Larry J Schaaf, Sun Pictures Catalogue Twelve: Talbot and Photogravure (New York: Hans P. Kraus, Jr, 1987), appendix. pp. 357–367.
