My dear Sir

I am sorry to have to confess that I forgot your request being busy at the time I received your note

[cuneiform] I have translated “dark races”

The Assyrian trans equivalent is written

[cuneiform] [cuneiform]

za-al-ma-at ga-ga-da

and,

[cuneiform][cuneiform]

zal-mat qaq-qa-di

here zalmat = [cuneiform]

and qaqqad = [cuneiform]

The variant zal-mat qaq-qa-di is given on one fragmentary copy of this Sargon legend which I have mislaid or I should have sent it to you – perhaps you will be able to make out a better rendering of this than I have given Sir H. Rawlinson long ago pointed out that these forms were equivalent before the Sargon fragments were found

Yours respectfully
George Smith

H. Fox Talbot Esq
