1HILLSIDE CRESCENT

EDINBURGH

15, ROYAL TERRACE

27 June 1870

My dear Sir,

Many thanks for your very clear & distinct letter of June 24.

In furtherance of the matters therein, I am rather inclined to ask you;

1st, had “hu” any other meaning than that of expressing a standard measure of length; and

2nd, what is the amount of importance of “ammat” meaning “the fore-arm”, besides a standard of length, – if that standard was not, as < would?> the Roman “cubitus” was, the length approximately of a human fore-arm?

But instead of troubling you with asking these things positively, – I merely beg your acceptance by post of a copy of the “Report” to be read at the Observatory here next Wednesday, & to be published afterwards with revision; – so that if anything strikes you as worthy of immediate correction on emendation,* <note on other half of sheet:> *See specially p.p. 32, 33, 34 <end of note> and you may feel inclined to write again, – I shall be able, & very glad also, to introduce such remark as from yourself.

Distinct from that, I hope also to request your acceptance of a copy of a recent little private work of mine, entitled “A poor-man’s Photography at the G. Pyramid”, – wherein it will appear that, aided by your photography, I have been able to produce a most unimpeachable witness to disprove some lately published unwarrantable & depreciatory statements touching the sockets of the Great Pyramid;

& I remain

Yours very truly

C. Piazzi Smyth

H. Fox Talbot Esq.
