Sunday March 28.th

My dear Henry

I have set up her Majesty <1> in the window; but as the day is very dark I am doubtful in regard to the result – I intend to give her a couple of hours & if that fails try her again some other day. – I will forward no more letters after today, – but I venture to send this one, as you are sure to be in Town at post time tomorrow. –

The paper in the press is not keeping well – I observed it to be a good deal discolored when I went this morning to take out a bit for the Queen. –

Your affte.
Constance.

It has had 2½ hours – I will send you a better one when there is Sun –

H. Fox Talbot Esqre
31. Sackville Street
London

Notes:

1. While this might be a copy of an engraving, it is also possible that it is a copy of an oil portrait propped up outside a Cloister window at Lacock Abbey, Schaaf 3709. See Larry J Schaaf, In Focus: William Henry Fox Talbot, photographs from The J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles: The J. Paul Getty Museum, 2002), plate 17, p. 42. Two close variant prints are in Talbot albums in the Fox Talbot Collection, the British Library, LA2246 and LA2262, Schaaf 3710. Victoria (1819–1901), Queen of the United Kingdom (1837–1901), Empress of India (1876–1901).
