September 25.
Lacock Abbey,
Chippenham.
My dear Henry
Lady Ilchester writes to me from Thirkleby Park, that she is not feeling well; and that consequently she will require some days’ rest in London, before coming on to Lacock – She hopes however that a delay till Monday will be sufficient, and she promises to write again by Saturday’s post after from Old Burlington Street. This change of day would not have made no difference to us had we been alone – but it is very unlucky on account of Mrs Traherne. –
Your are favoured by the weather today – as well as yesterday – Thank you for writing me word of your safe journey – Why was your train so inexact? – I did not succeed in getting <Gucin?> at Chippenham – but as a substitute we gave Wilkins some Gum Arabic – and Delectables. He was out in the garden yesterday afternoon when the sun shone out quite warm – and also today we saw him superintending the covering of the Conservatory. – He said that the air did him good – Our moon was very brilliant indeed last night. –
Your affectionate
Constance
If you would stay in London till Saturday, you might call in Burlington Street that morning and enquire after Lady Ilchester & learn her intentions.
