My dear Henry

Rosamond is very nearly recovered from the Measles – being quite herself again in comfort and cheerfulness, though of course rather enfeebled by the attack: and still without much appetite – but she is going steadily forward in the right direction – & coughs very little, considering – She sat up yesterday several hours in her room, & wrote a letter to Tilly – and today she has eaten her luncheon with us in our Salon. Her Doctor is quite pleased with her progress – he is at present giving her a tonic, and whenever he sees that her constitution system has completely resumed its usual aspect, he will give his opinion about other matters, connected with her general delicacy – Dr Daubeny was for a short time private physician to the late Ld Mt Edgcumbe, during that period of his remaining in London with Flora Macdonald as his companion, about a year before his death. – and the doctor was obliged to leave him on account of his own health – He told us that he never saw Caroline, as she was at Mount Edgcumbe all that time – partly on account of her health – I think I remember the circumstances, though not very clearly – Dr Daubeny is certainly an authority in the comparative merits of climates, having studied the subject a good deal – And I must admit that he does not speak very favorably of Nice. – he says it is not sheltered from several cold winds – This we knew before, & although not pleasant, we had thought of making the best of disadvantages – by staying prudently within doors as often as the weather should be blustering – But now comes another difficulty – about getting a suitable apartment at the Hτtel de France. According to arrangement with the Landlord, Bayer wrote to him from hence at the expiration of the 1st fortnight, to tell him that we were still in the same mind about returning to Nice, & claiming the fulfilment of his promise to give us a such an apartment as he knows we require – In his answer received yesterday, he can only promise us one room (besides a salon) with a Southern aspect: the other rooms must be to the North, which you know is not to be thought of for a moment. – No doubt the explanation of this is that he has found other families willing to pay a higher price for his rooms than Bayer felt justified in offering – and indeed I was rather surprised at the time that they seemed to accept his terms. – Bayer wrote again yesterday to say that this was not an arrangement that he could entertain, or lay before his family for consideration – but I don’t expect his remonstrance will avail anything – at least we are perfectly free to go elsewhere – Would you object; politically, to our going further into Italy? say Pisa, which is charmingly situated & even to Florence, nearer still to the Baths of Lucan – and not at all dear, as Bayer tells us. – He reckons the expense of the journey from San Remo to Genoa 345 francs – thereon to Spezia 315f, from la Spezia to Pisa 75f – total 735 francs, or about £30. – which sum does not seem unreasonable as an additional outlay, & for the object in view – always admitting that the doctor approves of the climate – and that we have your free permission to entertain the project. If you agree to it, you must please send me our Passport, which Bayer says we shall require – Time is getting on, and therefore I shall hope for your answer with as little delay as possible – but 10 days is long to wait for it when arrangements are to be concluded. –

Ela sends her love & will write some other day. –

Your affectionate
Constance

I hope you had my letter of last Tuesday, asking you to inform Coutts that Asquasciati frθres (of San Remo) had payed me £50 on their letter of Credit, although not addressed to themselves. –

Your will understand that £30 covers the expense of travelling – the hτtel bills being nearly the same each night, as when we are stationary –
