Lacock Abbey
June 7 Tuesday
My dear Henry
You were very good in writing to me on your arrival yesterday evening – and enclosing the good Bishop’s letter. There is something very soothing in his language – and which I recollect to be quite in accordance with his manner in conversation. I wish he may have found the subject of at your interview today as little complicated as he seemed to expect – but I can scarcely think it – We shall look eagerly for your promised letter tomorrow. – In the mean time I enclose a curious statement concerning Dr Ace, which I have just received from Ela. To quiet her mind I am writing a line to tell her that he is already set aside – But though the risk is past, I think we may learn from this new proof of the unsatisfactory way in which Ed. Nicholl conducts or pretends to conduct these serious matters, that it is quite unsafe to trust him. – in fact he misstates things in the most unscrupulous manner. – I heard an excellent discourse of Mr Roach this morning addressed to the members of the George Club – Charles says he spoke very well also at the dinner.
Tomorrow they two will have another hard day, with the County Club. I shall go to church for that discourse also; and am curious to hear in what way Mr Roach will throw novelty into the subject – It is certainly very hot: and we talk about a carriage when you return. – Thanks for thinking of it –
Your affectionate
Constance
