My Dear Constance

I was at first of the same opinion with Charles and the rest of you all that we must now look out for a successor to Goodwin, but Ela’s mention of the effects of the Quinine Wine make me doubtful again for if his illness was in great measure due to that, there wd be no danger of the misfortune occurring again. So I have been in a state of doubt for the last 2 or 3 days –

Mr Roach had most satisfactory interview with the Bishop on Saturday at Bristol. They had never met before.

The Bishop received him cordially and placed in his hand the institution to the living written on parchment, and signed by him, to which was appended the Episcopal seal of Gloucester and Bristol.

This document is an interesting one, and as Mr R. is to keep it I think you will like to see it some day. He then bade Mr Roach hold the seal in his hand while he administer’d to him the Oaths of Supremacy and conformity to the Church of England &c and then he offerred up a Prayer for him, which Mr Roach did not expect, and which touched him very much. Then saying he hoped they should soon meet again, he withdrew.

I hope all will be well in the Parish now, and that things will resume their tranquil course, which has been much ruffled during this year 1870. Monie & Mlle Amélina must be a great comfort to you I am so glad they are safely arrived. I am afraid you are exerting yourself too much.

Today was gloomy and rather foggy – the daylight was short. Charles is coming on Saturday unless he changes his mind.

Adieu love to all Your affte

Henry

I received this morning Yours of the 28th How about the Times? shall I order it for you?
